MANSFIELD -- Superman is coming to Richland County to aid local children in need.

Actor Dean Cain, who played the superhero in the 1990s series, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, will be in Mansfield on March 25 to help launch Ohio Helping Hands and to continue work on several faith films being produced in the area.

Ohio Helping Hands is a state non-profit that provides "Foster Family Fun Packs" to foster families.

It was created after JCFilms Studios filmed and recently released the movie, Chosena film produced in Mansfield that stars the 55-year-old Cain and Kevin Sorbo.    Click here to view the Chosen movie trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNFhE-UxZvM
Chosen is one of several faith and family films being produced in Ohio by Cain.

Chosen highlights the beauty of adoption and foster parenting, but it also shows challenges many adoptive and foster parents endure. It portrays how communities and people of faith can come together to help.

Ohio Helping Hands plans to donate 200 such packs this year throughout Ohio, a state which has about 16,000 children in foster care, according to the Ohio Dept. of Job & Family Services.

Each pack contains a sturdy luggage bag for children to store and transport their personal items. The packs are filled with games, crafts and other creative activities to help children break the ice with a new foster family, create a bond and have fun.

Cain will help launch Ohio Helping Hands effort by distributing the first set of bags to Richland County Children Services on March 25 at 6 p.m., just before the premiere of a new film, Joey & Rex Save the Church, at Crossroads Church, 1188 Park Ave. West.

Cain, a veteran actor born in Mount Clemens, Mich., took on his biggest role to date in 1993 when he played Superman opposite Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane. The show, which averaged 15 million viewers at its zenith, ran for four years, ending in 1997.

Cain has gone on to act in and/or produce a score of movies and television shows and was the host of Ripley's Believe It or Not! from 1999 to 2003.

RCCS Executive Director Nikki Harless will be in attendance to accept the bags from Cain on behalf of the agency and the families it serves.

"This is such a wonderful project and we're so excited to be a part of it," Harless said.

Stacey Stratton, executive director of Ohio Helping Hands, said children going into foster care are often removed from their homes with just some of their belongings stuffed into a trash bag.

"Knowing these children are also feeling scared, confused and alone, we wanted to create a non-profit to help support them emotionally as they transition into their new foster home," Stratton said.
