Money available for 10 full time AmeriCorps members to particiate in local reading pilot program

Richland County Youth and Family Council will receive $133,000 to support 10 full time AmeriCorps members to participate in the Ohio Reading Corps pilot program.

Richland County Children Services is a member of the local council. Franklin and Cuyahoga counties were also selected to be part of this pilot program.

The goal of the pilot program is to ensure that children can read proficiently by third grade by investing in preschool and kindergarten students with specific reading strategies. The Council is partnering with Mansfield City Schools and Head Start.

AmeriCorps is a national service initiative in which members agree to provide 1,700 hours of servuce for a living stipend of $12,100 per year.

AmeriCorps members serving in programs who successfully complete a term of service will receive an Education Award from the National Service Trust of $5,550 for a year of full-time service, with correspondingly smaller awards for less-than-full-time service.

The amount of the Education Award is determined on the basis of the Pell Grant award. A member has up to seven years after the term of service has ended to use the award.
